OpenAI was formed in 2015 as a nonprofit. One of its projects involved developing AI text generators and exploring natural language processing (NLP).

In 2019, OpenAI shared examples of text generated from a prompt. Some of the examples were better than others.

GPT-3 was released in mid-2020. Built on GPT-2, it can generate text from a prompt, generate predictive text, or be used for longer written work following specific templates.

Late in 2022, ChatGPT was released to anyone who wanted to set up an account. It generated lots of text, and lots of headlines.
